One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is one of Zambia’s most popular tourist attractions.
On Victoria Falls holidays you can walk in the footsteps of famous explorer David Livingstone. You’ll soon see why the local tribes that guided Livingstone here in 1855 named the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya – meaning ‘the smoke that thunders’; the water falls at a rate of over 1,000 metres per second, crashing down the 108-metre-high cliff in the world’s largest sheet of falling water.
The sound that it makes, especially during the ‘dry’ season, sounds like the Earth caving in and visiting the falls is an incredibly visceral experience – you’ll need to prepare for a thorough soaking should you wish to get up close to the falls themselves.
There are several viewpoints from the Zambian side, linked by walkways through the rainforest which grows along the banks of the Zambezi River, though the spray from the falls can be seen from many kilometres away.
We’d recommend visiting during the dry season, between April and July, when the falls are at their fullest. As the series of cataracts that make up the waterfall span the Zambian-Zimbabwean border, the most comprehensive tour includes viewpoints from either side.
However, for the ultimate perspective, we’d highly recommend the ‘Flight of the Angels’ for an aerial view, where you’ll soar over the great waterfall in a light aircraft or helicopter in an unforgettable vantage.
As well as the falls, the area is home to Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, which follows the banks of the upper Zambezi River for about 12 kilometres. Here you can take a boat trip along the river at sunset for a leisurely evening spotting large game and birdlife, visit local villages or cross into Botswana’s neighbouring Chobe National Park.
Adrenalin junkies can head to the Zambezi Gorges for bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
