With pristine warm waters and a diverse underwater ecosystem, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to snorkelling in Barbados

Clear waters around the Caribbean island provide exceptional visibility (between 40 to 70 feet for most of the year), so you'll likely spot a wide variety of aquatic life. One of the main attractions are the exotic fish and famous sea turtles, which often glide right past you. Colourful coral reefs and ancient shipwrecks that are now havens for marine life are further highlights...and don't forget the white sand beaches!

So, don a mask and snorkel and slip into the Caribbean Sea to create lasting memories amongst Barbados' underwater treasures.

Snorkelling in Barbados: your experience

The warm and calm waters of the Caribbean Sea on the west of the island provide ideal conditions for snorkelling. A guide may lead your snorkelling tour directly from the beach to explore shallow reefs, or you'll take a boat ride to deeper water depending on the area. A snorkelling excursion typically lasts around two to three hours, giving you ample time to spot as many creatures as possible.

Swim with sea life

Barbados is home to a diverse array of marine life. The island is renowned for its sea turtle population, so you'll likely be swimming amongst graceful hawksbill and green turtles. Parrotfish and filefish are another common sight in Barbados' waters, adding a splash of colour to the underwater ecosystem. Other life often seen darting between the coral are angelfish and Sergeant Major Fish, with distinctive yellow and black stripes.

Although less common, manta rays can occasionally be spotted at some of the popular snorkel spots too.

What’s included in a snorkelling tour?

For a safe and enjoyable snorkelling experience, regardless of your swimming ability, always wear a life jacket. Choose a tour with a knowledgeable guide who will conduct a safety briefing and provide a mask, snorkel tube, and fins, before guiding you to the best snorkelling spots. Afterwards, refreshments are usually provided as part of your excursion.

We can arrange a number of day trips and sailing excursions which include snorkelling, so you can combine the thrill of exploration with the tranquil beauty of the underwater world. On a cruise with Inspiring Travel, a dedicated crew will arrange a delicious lunch onboard, or you can stop off at a beach bar to join locals for a rum punch. Whether you anchor at a tranquil bay and snorkel amongst sea turtles or admire the aquamarine water from dry land, a private cruise gives you far more flexibility than a group tour.

What you need to bring

Packing a few essential items in a waterproof bag will help to ensure you're fully prepared for your snorkelling adventure.

  • Swimwear: Pack swimming attire with comfortable and breathable material so you can easily navigate the water. To avoid sunburn, a rash guard or t-shirt over the top of swimwear is highly recommended, as are reef shoes to avoid any nasty coral scrapes.
  • Towel: Bring a towel to dry off after snorkelling or to lay on the beach to enjoy the tropical climate. Consider a quick-drying and compact towel which will conveniently fit into your beach bag.
  • Suncream: Protect delicate skin from the sun's rays with a high SPF rating. Help protect the oceans  by opting for a reef-safe sunscreen, designed to minimise any negative impact on the marine environment.
  • Hat and sunglasses: Shield your face and eyes from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated during your snorkelling adventure in Barbados by bringing a reusable water bottle.
  • Underwater camera: Capture the beauty of the underwater world with a waterproof camera or Go Pro for those all-important encounters.

When’s a good time to snorkel?

Barbados offers excellent snorkelling throughout the year. The dry season between December and May sees generally calm sea conditions, which in turn means excellent water visibility. During these months you'll have a good chance of encountering sea turtles, beautiful fish, and other marine species in the blue waters. June to November has a higher chance of rainfall, so visibility may be slightly reduced, however showers don't last long and the water remains warm.

Visit in August or September to witness a mass coral spawning which increases activity around the reefs. If you're dreaming of swimming with sea turtles, you'll have a higher chance of spotting them during nesting season between May and October. Many of our luxury Barbados hotels create private areas for nesting turtles, and you may spot hatchlings making their way to the sea.
