A place of traditional charm with a celebratory feel makes a Munich city break one packed full of new experiences.
While the city might be best known for its annual Oktoberfest beer festival and December's Christmas markets, there is much to recommend it for a short-haul break year-round.
The historic centre, gothic architecture and abundance of museums entice you to wander the streets with your camera in hand, stopping off for kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake) at a charming cafe.
Don't miss the Nymphenburg Palace, once a royal home for the Kings of Bavaria and now one of Munich's best tourist attractions, where you can stroll around the halls of the baroque palace and pristine landscaped gardens.
Of course Munich's modern history is far more turbulent, and you might like to spend a morning on a walking tour learning about why Munich was called the 'Capital of the Nazi Movement'. A poignant visit to Dachau, Germany's first concentration camp, will give you a more in-depth understanding of the atrocities that took place during World War 2.
By stark contrast, modern-day Munich is a celebration of life, with its welcoming Bavarian hospitality, beer gardens, designer fashion boutiques, live music venues and urban parks.
If you fancy a dip there are river swims aplenty in Munich, or year-round there is the stunning art nouveau bathhouse, Müllersches Volksbad. Head out of the city just 20km to Starnberger See and you'll find a large lake known as "Munich's summer swimming pool" where you can swim and SUP, or cycle and walk the paths around it.
Munich is full of surprises too, and these are just a handful of the more unusual and special experiences you can have on a luxury break to the German city:
- Watch pro-surfers tackle the waves on the Eisbach River in Munich's largest park, the Englischer Garten.
- Head to Marienplatz Square for 11am or midday and see the large mechanical clock, the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, tell its story.
- Dine at one of Germany's nine three-Michelin-starred restaurants, Munich's JAN by Jan Hartwig.
- Have your camera at the ready to visit Munich's "endless staircase"; the Umschreibung sculpture by Olafur Eliasson.
