Hotel information
Quiet and unassuming, from the outside Mekong Riverview Hotel fits in perfectly with the many temples and sites that await you in the ancient parts of Luang Prabang Peninsula.
This particular boutique Laos property is actually the brainchild of a Swedish immigrant and has clearly been a labour of love, with his commitment to showcasing local culture evident throughout. In fact, he is so passionate about the hotel and surrounding UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang that you are likely to see him for a casual chat or shared glass of wine during your stay, such is the relaxed atmosphere here.
As a result, Mekong Riverview is a wonderful fusion of east-meets-west hospitality, with that unbeatable waterfront location impossible to ignore too.
The hotel’s pretty gardens and riverside vistas actually attract visitors from far and wide, not only paying guests, as winding paths meander through alluring floral scents and tropical trees; an excellent backdrop when taking time to absorb the tranquillity of the area, and countryside beyond. The same can also be said of the excellent Viewpoint Restaurant at Mekong Riverside, one of the best in the region where much of a locally-inspired menu is sourced directly from the hotel’s ongoing organic garden project. Located just across the water and accessible by boat, you really can enjoy a garden to table experience here as the project goes from strength to strength, with cookery classes also available; a great use of the fragrant herbs that greet you as you disembark!
Then, with a huge variety of activities and excursions in the local vicinity too, whether dipping into the Laos’s history at the National Museum or taking a tour of the holy Pak Ou Caves to witness a jaw-dropping collection of Buddha icons, visiting the highlights of Luang Prabang Peninsula while staying at Mekong Riverview Hotel is also easily done. And if a full body massage or relaxing aromatherapy treatment is your idea of heaven while away, their small spa or in-room services should do the trick.
Finally, as evening falls, head back to Viewpoint Restaurant and feast on that fiesta of flavours or, for a taste of local culture, visit the nearby night market where you’ll find all sorts of treasures and keepsakes to take home with you, street food and family-run eateries aplenty.
Room Options
With a total of six room categories to choose from, there’s a good selection of accommodation options at the Mekong Riverview Hotel, with mainly the view and floorplan differing between them. The style across the board is a nice balance between a few modern touches, clean lines and polished wooden floors, meeting locally woven throws, handmade ornaments and traditional furniture. Additional comforts then come in the form of luxe remote-controlled beds imported from Sweden, balconies, complimentary soft drinks in the minibar and air-conditioning for those humid evenings.

Restaurants & Bars
Viewpoint Restaurant
Given this name for a very good reason, Viewpoint Restaurant takes full advantage of the resort’s captivating surrounds, perched as it is overlooking the water and shoreline foliage. As a hotel, Mekong Riverview prides itself on the traditional Lao cuisine that’s served from the kitchens here, and many visit the property purely for the food. So, while there are worldwide favourites available – including, in a nod to the owner’s country of origin, Swedish meatballs – for a great introduction to Laotian cooking, you may struggle to find better. Familiar specialities such as spicy chicken satay and crunchy spring rolls will delight, or for something more regional perhaps steamed fish in banana leaves or a homely Luang Prabang Stew; delicious.

Activities & Entertainment
Calling a listed UNESCO World Heritage site home means there is plenty to see while visiting Mekong Riverview Hotel. The iconic Wat Xieng Thong temple, otherwise known as the Golden City Temple, next door to your hotel being a good place to start. Borrow a complimentary bicycle and familiarise yourself with the quaint town of Luang Prabang, a real picturesque jewel in the Laotian crown or, take a walk on the wild side and meet some of the larger locals at a nearby Elephant camp. A dedicated concierge here will be ready and willing to help make arrangements, should you find yourself in need of inspiration during leisure days.
