The emphasis is well and truly on pampering and relaxation at Matachica Resort. The resort is adult-only (minimum age 16), guaranteeing a tranquil atmosphere enhanced by warm, friendly staff.

Villas come in a variety of styles, and each is individually decorated with bright colours. Traditional thatched roofs and vibrant walls and floors are complemented by an array of art collected from around Latin America. All rooms feature air-conditioning, ceiling fans, bathrobes, plush Matouk and Frette linens and private patios with a hammock.

Enjoy Belizean and international cuisine at the celebrated Mambo Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, where you can opt to dine indoors or out on the sand. Bread, pastries and pastas are made by hand in the kitchen, and seafood is incredibly fresh. Most vegetables and herbs used in the dishes here are grown in the organic garden at sister property Gaia River Lodge.

Swim in the stunning infinity pool, or keep up with your fitness regime at the gym. A range of treatments and therapies are available at Jade Spa, with many using local natural ingredients. Borrow one of the resort’s complimentary bicycles to explore, have a movie night with one of the resort’s many DVDs, relax in the hot tub or take to the water for snorkelling, sailing or sea kayaking. Outside the resort there are plenty of ways to explore the local area, including fishing, diving, cave tubing, horseback riding and exploring Maya ruins.
