The largest state in New England, Maine truly has it all.
And only an hour from Boston; lakes and rivers, sand beaches, jagged coves and rocks and mountainous regions abound.
A real gem of New England visits and stays in Portland, Kennebunkport, Boothbay Harbor and Bar Harbor, if time, are recommended.
Travelling up the coastline from Boston, relax at the sand beaches of Kennebunkport or Ogunquit and then continue up to the city of Portland pausing for a photo opportunity en route at the iconic Portland Head Light lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth.
A vibrant and cultural city home to the Portland Museum of Art, boutique stores and a Freedom Trail, Portland is a good place to spend a day or even a night.
From Portland onwards, the coastline changes and sand beaches become a distant memory. Interjected with coves and rocks, this dramatic coastline is home to a grand total of 65 lighthouses. Whilst on the coast, order the delicious fresh lobster and seafood- a real treat, nearly 90% of the country's lobster produce is caught off this coast.
A popular coastal town, Boothbay Harbor is conveniently located under an hour and a half’s drive from Portland. Its main attraction is kayaking, whale watching excursions and its picturesque coastline.
Further up Maine’s dramatic coastline is the beautiful Bar Harbor, the gateway to the Acadia National Park. A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, biking, hiking and driving the scenic Loop Road in this 40, 000-acre park, are musts to enjoy a full experience in the second most visited national park in the country.
