The oldest wine region in Australia, the Hunter Valley is packed full of things to do, things to drink, things to eat and things to see.
Just three hours north of Sydney, this region is known for its rolling vineyards, fine dining restaurants, spas and umpteen things to do. Visit as a day trip from the city; include the Hunter Valley as part of a New South Wales self-drive; or perhaps as your Travel Specialist about combining this region with the Blue Mountains and Australia’s central coast as part of a multi-centre holiday.
Wining and dining is certainly a highlight in the Hunter Valley. Tour wine estates and vineyards, and partake in a wine tasting to sample some of Australia’s finest Sémillon and Shiraz. Gourmet cuisine is a big part of the Hunter Valley experience; here you can indulge in everything from locally-made cheese to the most delectable chocolate, with plenty of fine dining experiences to savour too.
For more indulgence, head to one of the many excellent day spas scattered across the valley, or perhaps play a round or two on a championship golf course. Special events and festivals take place here year-round – from Jazz in the Vines in October and the Sculpture in the Vineyards event in November to the Lovedale Long Lunch dining event in May.
Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the chance to explore the drastic landscapes of Barrington Tops National Park; here you’ll find 1,250 square kilometres of nature to explore, packed with lush forest, rugged hills, sparkling rivers and towering trees.
A breathtaking hot air balloon flight promises unforgettable views and is truly the best way to take in the natural beauty of the Hunter Valley. Glide over vineyards and enjoy the views as the sun rises – it’s well worth the early start.
