Amantaka, a turn-of-the-century French colonial-style property that has since been brilliantly remodelled, redeveloped and revamped into the leading Luang Prabang luxury hotel, though plenty of character certainly still remains.

Hotel information
For anyone lucky enough to stay at the all-suite Amantaka in central Luang Prabang, they’ll find a luxury Laos resort that embodies the best of both its surrounding local influences and the contemporary comforts of a modern hotel, with 100 years of history to boot.
Amantaka’s fantastic location – within touching distance of the Mekong River, highlights of ancient Luang Prabang and the wider province – is owed to its former life, as an important French government building-come-medical centre during colonial times. Today, however, the prestigious Aman Hotel Group have turned this property into a top boutique Laos hotel that could not be further from its less exotic past.
Take the suites at Amantaka for example. Beautifully adorned in a fusion of antique-style touches such as vintage rolltop bathtubs and traditional ornaments, yet also four-poster beds, Bose speakers, iPod docking stations and a distinctly minimalist design as standard. Many of them feature their own immaculate swimming pool and private courtyard or terrace, though all feel fresh, clean and extremely enticing; just what you need if visiting in the height of summer.
The story will continue throughout your stay, as the Amantaka hotel maintains a typical colonial-era architectural style of squared white walls, tall windows and terracotta tiles common in this region of Laos. Yet within the hotel there lies a tropical Luang Prabang retreat, preened gardens, a huge central swimming pool and sun patio, two restaurants, a gym and spa offering the full range of relaxation treatments, plus a soothing spa pool and steam room to round it all off. Add charming service, locally sourced produce filling a seasonal menu of lip-smacking Laotian cuisine and even complimentary bicycles to explore the best of the UNESCO-listed old town, for a winning combination at Amantaka, one of Luang Prabang’s finest resorts.
Room Options
The 24 suites at Amantaka hotel are exquisite. Contemporary touches come in the form of chrome fixtures, Bose Bluetooth speakers and modern outdoor furnishings, while tall ceilings make the most of the building’s original architecture, lots of light, white walls and polished stone floor tiles finishing a real sanctuary-like space. All but one of the suite categories sport a private pool and sun terrace, with the higher-level categories featuring larger swimming pools, gardens and a separate lounge area.

Facilities/Amenities
Amantaka hotel packs a lot into its neatly manicured grounds, with a spa, soothing indoor plunge pool, steam room, gym, outdoor swimming pool and sun terrace, gardens, two restaurants and a bar all onsite, with local tennis courts also available nearby. Other services include babysitting, laundry and an excellent concierge, while little extras such as Wi-Fi and complimentary bicycles go without saying here.
Restaurants & Bars
The Dining Room
Proudly boasting the best of Laotian cuisine, though going one further in allowing diners to customise certain dishes on their seasonal, locally sourced menu, the Dining Room Restaurant does Amantaka hotel proud. The restaurant itself is nice and airy, decorated in a modest though traditional style of wicker chairs and oversized indoor pot plants, all setting the scene for the delicious regional food to follow.

Lounge Bar
A healthy selection of local herb and spice-infused cocktails and juices can be tried and tasted at Amantaka’s Lounge Bar, though a simple sparkling water or ice-cold beer is also available! Leisurely, relaxed and a little informal, this is an easy spot to unwind throughout the day and into the evening.
Activities & Entertainment
Amantaka is one of the more centrally located Luang Prabang hotels, meaning the Mekong River, Mount Phousi, UNESCO-listed old town and surrounding temples – of which there are dozens – are all close by. This particular Laos hotel is also keen on its surrounding cultural heritage, so dance performances, cookery classes and a tour of nearby rice paddies are always popular pastimes. So too the interesting catalogue of 19th-century Buddhist photographs held in one of the lounge rooms, well worth a peak.
